Baseball in the Yard

Did you know that both George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush loved baseball? George H. W. Bush was captain of the Yale Baseball Team in college and George W. Bush was once part owner of the Texas Rangers Baseball Team! Baseball itself is truly an all-American sport that has a history of uniting our great nation in times of war and great distress.

The Bush Family Home State Historic Site is hosting an event to honor the Bush’s love of baseball and the game itself and its history of unity with games, crafts, and a chance to win two different baseballs, during the hours of 10 am to 3 pm on April 12th! One baseball will be signed by the Rockhounds, Midland’s own Baseball Team. The other baseball will be signed by Texas Rangers Hall-of-Famer Ivan “Pudge” Rodriquez. The Rockhounds’ own mascot will be joining them near the end of the event at 3 pm, to meet guests and announce the winners of the baseballs! Join the Bush Family Home staff for a great time celebrating our nation’s very own sport!

“There’s going to be so much going on! Plus, there’s a chance to win two signed baseballs! It doesn’t get much better than that!” says Educator Erin Frigo.

Keep Big Bend Wild

Keep Big Bend Wild

Texans love Big Bend National Park, but as it grows in popularity, are the things they love at risk? Former national park superintendent Bob Krumenaker will talk about the grassroots Keep Big Bend Wild (KBBW) initiative, whose goal is to guarantee that the park’s most important asset – its wild, open spaces – will be protected in perpetuity into the future.
KBBW is building a widespread coalition of support for a long-dormant effort to see the still-undeveloped wild lands of Big Bend National Park away from the existing roads and facilities be protected as federal wilderness, something only Congress can enact. It’s the best way to protect the park’s natural and cultural resources, wildlife, night skies and natural sounds for future generations while maintaining the facilities and access today’s visitors enjoy.
KBBW is working with the NPS to build the public support essential to show our Congressional delegation that that this protection is something Texans want. Wilderness is not a partisan issue and has been championed by people of all political parties. Come, learn about the history and context of this initiative, and be part of a discussion of how you can help to
Keep Big Bend Wild.

NED Talks with Trudy Lewis

She will be discussing the Tom Lea Odessa Post Office Mural.
Trudy Lewis is a retired public-school teacher. She spent 39 years teaching AP U.S. and European history as well as International Baccalaureate History of the Americas in Waco, Midland, and Odessa. While teaching in Odessa, she regularly took students to visit Tom Lea’s 1940 Stampede mural in the post office. Her teaching had such an impact that one student later composed a musical piece inspired by Stampede. In 2014, she presented at the Smithsonian American Art Museum conference on Tom Lea’s New Deal murals, helping forge an historic agreement between the U.S. postal service and the Odessa Council for the Arts and the Ellen Noel Museum to restore and care for Stampede. For the first time, the U.S. Postal Service allowed a community to restore federal property and move the mural to a safe environment at the Ellen Noel Art Museum. Trudy is married to Tryon Lewis, and they have two grown daughters.
