Playtime at the Playa: How Animals Adapt

🦊 How Animals Adapt | Zoology | March 21st
Survival in the wild isn’t just about luck—animals use seasonal adaptations to thrive. From growing thicker fur in winter to migrating for food, nature is full of fascinating survival strategies. Join us as we uncover the incredible ways wildlife adjusts to changing conditions.

This season of Playtime at The Playa is all about cycles in nature—the patterns, rhythms, and systems that keep our environment thriving. From the life cycle of trees and flowers to the way animals adapt through the seasons, we’ll uncover the hidden connections that shape our world.

Each session will highlight a different cycle, whether it’s the water cycle nourishing plants, the food chain transferring energy, or the rock cycle shaping the land beneath us. By exploring these natural processes, young learners will gain a deeper understanding of how everything in nature is interconnected. By the end of the season, families will leave with cherished memories, practical sustainability skills, and a deeper appreciation for the ecosystems around them.

Program Details

Playtime at the Playa is a free, open-play program designed for young learners and their caregivers to explore, discover, and connect with nature! As part of the WILD at The Preserve outdoor education series, these sessions provide hands-on experiences that encourage curiosity, creativity, and environmental stewardship.

📅 Schedule: Alternating Fridays (March-May)
Time: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
📍 Location: The Preserve’s Outdoor Classroom, Midland, TX

Cirque Italia

Feb 21 – Friday:  7:30pm
Feb 22 – Saturday: 1:30pm, 4:30pm, & 7:30pm
Feb 23 – Sunday:  1:30pm & 4:30pm
Feb 24 – Monday:  7:30pm

Cirque Italia presents “Aquatic Spectacular.” The name reflects a unique attribute under the tent, as the show features a custom designed water stage that travels from city to city. The stage holds 35,000 gallons of water that performers dazzle over while thrilling the audience with every move. With this “unique feature” under the tent, guests will be surprised, for it’s a show of its own!

Started in 2012, Cirque Italia is an Italian entertainment company that brings a performance of European style. It is described as a “vivid, dramatic, and moving experience under a customized traveling tent.”

Cirque Italia brings the appreciation of production and circus arts together to create a night to be remembered.

At Cirque Italia, the high-energy acts swing from ropes, flip over trapezes, and zip by on BMX bikes and roller skates—pushing the boundaries of human ability. Founder Manuel Rebecchi—the nephew of Moira Orfei, the world-renowned queen of the Italian circus—combined his family's pedigree with his own groundbreaking ideas to form a company that leaves crowds breathless and competitors hurrying to catch up.

Inspired by the element of water, the acts express versatility and fluidity through human movement while curtains of rain and fountain jets crisscross in time to each move. Laser lights and bubbles also add to the interdimensional effect. In a nod to the inner child, mermaids rise from the depths, and even dinosaurs make an appearance.

Presidents Day Event

Presidents Day Event

The Bush Family Home State Historic Site is planning a fantastic Presidents Day Event in February. On February 15th from 10 am-3 pm, experience our human wax museum with children dressed up as former presidents and first ladies will tell their stories. We will also have a special log cabin craft for visitors to do. This is a great way to find out about the 45 men who occupied the White House. Tours of the home will be free that day.

If parents are interested in having their child participate in the wax museum, sign up sheets are available at the Bush Family Home or you can request one by emailing bushfamilyhome@thc.texas.gov. There are two time slots: 10 am-noon and 1 pm-3 pm. This is a great way for your child to research a president and first lady, find clothes that resembles the president, and find some fascinating facts. Site staff can help.

“We are excited about this year’s event with little ones to help teach about the different presidents,” Site Manager Troy Gray said.

Art of Magic!

Art of Magic!

You’re invited to our special one-night, family-friendly fundraising event, Art of Magic, on Friday, January 24 at 7 pm at the Midland County History Museum!

The Midland Historical Society welcomes local magician Bronson Chadwick. This large-scale magic show features classics of magic such as Floating in the Air and other masterpieces, all topped with humor and a bold soundtrack for all ages.

The magic show will open the ‘History of Magic in West Texas’ exhibit. Developed specifically for the Midland Historical Society from Chadwick’s private collection, this exhibit features state illusion props and other paraphernalia used by magicians in West Texas across past decades. This is a rare opportunity to view a little-known aspect of Midland history.

Illusionist and slight-of-hand artist Bronson Chadwick has entertained audiences commercially for over fifteen years. He specializes in theatrical presentations of magic for corporate events, event centers, colleges, and similar groups. When not on the road presenting his larger theatrical programs, Bronson can be found working with various nonprofits and educational organizations through his Magic in the Library Initiative which uses magic illusions to help teach readership skills to elementary students.

Tickets for this event are $10. All the proceeds from the Art of Magic event will go to support the work of the Society for the development of the Museum.
